The Ultimate Reasons to Pick a WordPress Website

WordPress Websites

According to the digital marketing think tank Smart Insights, just under half the world’s population – 3.196 billion people – are now using social media. With numbers like these, it’s no wonder small business owners everywhere are asking, “If I use social media, do I need a WordPress website?”

While social media may seem to be a magic bullet for all your marketing and branding needs, experts set the record straight on why websites must remain the keystone of your business’ online presence. And, in particular, why a website created in WordPress reigns supreme.

Background

On the heels of Facebook’s arrival in 2004, businesses began harnessing social media’s marketing potential. It granted companies of every size unprecedented access to their customers and opened a dialogue between the two.

The medium tore down walls that once separated big corporations from offering its customers a personalized shopping experience. For small business it gave unprecedented reach, connecting owners directly with their target audience. Even more, small businesses could finally compete with the big dogs’ marketing budgets and capture much-needed market share.

Now, nearly twenty years later, Facebook has matured introducing features such as analytics, geofencing, and retargeting to weaponize content. Brand identity can now be reaffirmed with even more platforms like Instagram. For example, to show the lifestyle that goes along with products being hyped.

This is all good news, but is it good enough?

Websites: Credibility, Control, Value

According to a recent article in the Bulldog Reporter, one of the web’s leading sources for PR and marketing communications news, research shows that while consumers use social platforms as their primary source for information, only 55 percent trust the content they find there. Instead, consumers deem company owned and operated websites and apps to be trustworthy, credible, accurate and up-to-date.

While there are countless reasons to make your WordPress website the main hub and final destination for all of your online marketing activities, here are Sasquatch’s top three:

Sasquatch’s Top 3 Reasons For WordPress Websites

  1. Credibility. It cannot be overstated that 75% of online users judge a company’s credibility based on its website’s design.  With that said, people are likely to engage with a company they can trust. If your site is the launching pad towards building a solid relationship then you are going in the right direction.
  2. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow. Remember Myspace? How about Tumblr? When it comes to social media the next big thing can quickly become yesterday’s news. Social media giant Facebook claims that people in 2018 spent 50 million fewer hours on the site than in 2017. When a relationship is established and maintained on a social media platform only, the relationship may be connected to the brand, but it is owned by the platform. Building websites gives you 100% ownership and control over everything from design, and content, to hosting.
  3. Return on Investment (ROI). Free tools such as WordPress.com mean you can create a high-end website that won’t break the budget. A search engine optimized (SEO) website puts your business in front of thousands of potential consumers for less. It can help you reach a wider target audience for promoting your services or products. That coupled with content on the site influences buying decisions across all industries.

WordPress: The World’s Most Popular Site Website Builder

WordPress has been used to create nearly one-third of the world’s websites. This ranges from personal blogs to highly matrixed sites for commercial titans including Sony, Time Inc., the New York Post, and NBC.

While it is one of several site builders and content management systems (CMS) used today, WordPress is the most popular, touted by experts as the gold standard. Chief among the reasons why is it allows you edit and change your website’s appearance without using code. In addition, the web masters at Sasquatch, offer their favorite reasons for using WordPress:

It is also a factor in Google rankings. The good news is WordPress offers a variety of responsive theme designs. Or users can make a static site responsive with plugins and modifications to theme files.

It’s never been easier with WordPress’ intuitive and easy-to-manage Admin dashboard. It has all the features needed to customize any pages and create posts right away.

Born to Blog

Remember reading a few paragraphs back that WordPress is a content management system (with emphasis on the word “content”)? When first launched, in 2003, its sole purpose was for its creators to use it as a platform for writing blogs of their own. Because of this, one could say that it essentially has a blogging function built in.

Even though we are continually told video is king, blogging still has a very important role. For one, it is a direct connection with your customers.

Why Create a WordPress Website?

When doing business online, on the phone, or in person, customers always have questions and want to learn more on a variety of topics. It’s like your second-grade teacher said, “There are no dumb questions.” Also. “If you have a question, there are probably ten more people who have the same question; they just didn’t speak up.” These questions and topics can be turned into blogs using your company and the people in it as subject matter experts (SME).

A subject-matter expert is a person who has a certain level of expertise in a particular area. Then, they can explain the technical or semi-technical information in a way that someone who has no background in it can easily understand. These types of blogs let your followers know that you are current with the latest trends, news, and innovations in your field.

Once the blog goes live you can use it to extend some goodwill to your own list of contacts by sending the link out in a mass email blast campaign. You can also tease excerpts on your social media channels with a link for users to click if they want to read more.

Finally, blogs are another way to improve your SEO ranking. The more you blog, the more content search engines have to crawl and index. By boosting your ranking  your site becomes an information resource to an even broader audience.

WordPress Websites Grow With Your Business

Many WordPress users want more specialized functions related to their business’ specific needs. The plugin directory offers a variety of plugins—small pieces of code designed to perform specific tasks—that allow users to add features such as shopping carts, galleries, contact forms, and more to any compatible WordPress site.  Plugins can be activated, deactivated and uninstalled based on changing needs.

While social media is indisputably a powerful marketing tool. However, nothing takes the place of a professionally designed and branded website to establish credibility. WordPress is the best platform for creating your image, managing content you have 100% control and ownership of, and scaling features quickly to meet the needs of your growing business.

Then, you used MailChimp to blast messages to all of your contacts, even people you haven’t spoken to in years. SEO is short for search engine optimization. It’s the practice of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic. As well as exposure to your brand, through non-paid (aka “organic”) search engine results.

What is a search engine?

A search engine is a software system that carries out web or Internet searches. The biggest and most popular is Google which accounts for more than 80% of the market share. After a user enters a query such as “best web designers near me,” the search results are presented in a line of results known as search engine results pages (SERPs). The information is an aggregation of links to web pages, images, videos, infographics, articles, research papers, and other files.

To rank high in a search engine, you must understand what people are searching for online. It is also important to have the answers they want, the words they’re using, and the type of content they wish to consume. Knowing the answers to these questions will let you connect with the people searching online for the solutions you offer.

What is Ranking?

Ranking is the methodology search engines use to decide where or in what order pieces of content should be displayed on a SERP. To offer a comparison, think of it similarly to the way the military ranks its personnel. In the military, the generals are on the very top of the pecking order because they are most important. From there, other personnel follow in descending order – generals > colonels > majors > captains > lieutenants > sergeants, then privates at the very bottom.

Ranking works hand in hand with search visibility – how predominantly the content is shown in the results. High visibility content traditionally appears at the very top of the search engine hierarchy and may display a caption from the site to help the reader quickly identify if it satisfies they search requirements. Less visible content may not even show up on the first page of the results. Because of this, those sites are generally disregarded and rarely accessed.

How do SEOs rankings work?

What tools does Google use to decide which pages/websites to show in response to a  search? How do you get the right traffic to your site?

Google’s algorithm is incredible complex, but at a high level:

  • Google looks for pages containing high-quality, relevant information related to the user’s search
  • They decide which is appropriate by crawling or reading your website’s content and evaluating whether it is what the searcher is looking for; this is mostly related to the keywords it contains.
  • They determine quality through using numerous criteria. However, one of the most important is the number and quality of other websites that link to your page/site. For example, if the only sites that link to your site are blogs no one else has linked to, and my site gets links from trusted places like NYTimes.com, then my site will be more trusted and presumed to be of higher quality than yours.

There are hundreds of ranking factors Google’s algorithm considers in response to searches.

What are keywords and why should I care about them?

Keywords are a significant feature in an SEO strategy. They are simply words and phrases used in the content of your website, designed to help users find you using a search engine. Furthermore, they should be expertly woven into the content as to not distract the reader from the experience and information being presented. This should be fairly easy to do since the words themselves should be selected because they are also intuitively the same words the visitor is using to find you when doing their search.

The biggest mistake SEO companies make is to only focus on keyword optimization when first building their website. Older keywords must be reconsidered on a regular basis while high-volume, competitive keywords should be updated with longer phrases intended to bring the absolute perfect visitor to your site.

SEO best practices dictate that relevant keywords appear in several eye-catching areas on your site including headers and body content of pages to your URLs to metatags to image file names.

Are Rankings Different on Desktops vs. Mobile Devices?

You wouldn’t think so, but they are! Google looks at desktop and mobile user experiences very differently.

Because of Chrome and Android, Google has more data on mobile devices and can treat them quite dissimilarly. Furthermore, more users are searching using mobile and wearable devices using voice command features to initiate searches. As such, search features are continually evolving to adapt to different ways of searching.

In March 2018, Google moved completely to mobile-first indexing. This adjustment mandated all businesses have mobile-optimized websites so it can rank searches on desktop and mobile devices. Google will evaluate the user experience (UX) and search engine optimization of mobile-optimized user experiences for SERP ranking.

Is there ever a time you shouldn’t strive to rank high?

There is a lie that is been perpetuated for decades that often passes as truth. It is, “All publicity is good publicity.” To be fair, maybe it was true in the early days of mass media when there were merely a handful of news outlets and a bad story could be spun into a positive one by a masterful publicist. However, the game has changed significantly in the age of social media, citizen journalists, and everyone with a device (and possibly an axe to grind) able to annihilate a person or business’ reputation with a few harsh words or scathing review. With that said, is it possible to rebound in the face of scandal?

Yes, but it is not easy.

Removing negative information is not as simple as hitting the delete button on your keyboard.  Between the viral nature of the internet and internet guidelines concerning content removal, some result will never go away completely. However, they can be suppressed or buried in the SEO rankings.

Suppression is a key tactic in today’s reputation management toolbox.  While it is not an instantaneous fix, suppression effectively makes negative information much harder to come by. By preventing damaging content from achieving high rank, first page SERP status, the odds of anyone finding it are negligible.

In fact, a 2014 study by Advanced Web Rankings showed that 67% of web users rarely go past the top five listings, and almost 95% of web traffic is generated from items on the first page of search results. The means only 5% of all internet users would even think of digging further for the salacious bit of information they seek. Therefore, the individual or entity’s public perception remains in favorable light.
